PTUA Announces Maroondah and Yarra Ranges Local Area Committee

The Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) in cooperation with several associations has formed the Maroondah and Yarra Ranges Local Area Committee to continue in providing a local and vocal presence in demanding better public transport.

"Public Transport in the outer east has been continually neglected by the state government. The Outer Eastern PTUA Branch is committed to providing a local and vocal presence to demand better public transport in Maroondah" PTUA Outer East Branch Convener, Alex Makin said. "The Maroondah Local Area Committee will meet locally and is open to all residents and traders of Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges."

The PTUA in conjunction with the Croydon Conservation Society and Margaret Stevens, a long-time accessible transport campaigner formed the Maroondah Local Area Committee to provide a local voice for residents responding to local public transport concerns.

"The strong support the PTUA has received from the Croydon Conservation Society and Margaret Stevens who is a representative of a number of accessible transport groups, demonstrates the widespread desire for improved public transport in the outer east" Mr Makin said.

"The youth and elderly face severe isolation due to a lack of public transport," Croydon Conservation Society Secretary, Ms. Hardiman said. "The average household spends up to 15% of their income on private transportation, while parents find themselves spending the little spare time they have acting as taxis for their children."

"We call on Maroondah Council to actively consult our committee. Maroondah Council must publicly lobby for bus service upgrades and the long proposed but never delivered renovation of Ringwood Station," Mr. Makin said. "Neil Rose, the current mayor must focus on issues in Maroondah and not Heatherdale Station which is located in the City of Whitehorse".

"Petitions are currently being circulated to demonstrate support for key bus services in Maroondah to be upgraded to premium status, allowing seven day a week travel", Mr Makin said. "Once delivered to Parliament the State Government must honour this request to demonstrate that it is serious in providing public transport for all residents of Melbourne including those in the outer east."

The Maroondah Local Area Committee will meet on the 16th of November at 7:30 pm in Croydon and is open to the public. For venue details please contact Alex Makin on 9650 7898 or e-mail alex.makin@ptua.org.au
