Media Release11/05/2001Return of Country Trains WelcomedThe Public Transport Users Association has welcomed the return of country rail services announced today by Transport Minister Peter Batchelor. PTUA Secretary Vaughan Williams said that the announcement was a welcome reversal of the decimation of Victoria's passenger rail network under the Kennett government. "We are very pleased to hear that Mildura, Ararat, Bairnsdale and Leongatha will all have their train services reinstated," said Mr Williams. "The PTUA has been pushing for these lines to re-open for some time and is very glad to have the government's support." "These re-openings have the potential to compliment the proposed upgrading of services to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon. Victoria has the basis for a great public transport system, and this step shows the government's support for making it a reality." "The restoration of services is an excellent start to creating a first-rate regional public transport network in Victoria. We congratulate the government on this initiative, and look forward to working with them on further improvements," concluded Mr Williams Contacts: Not FoundIt looks like nothing was found at this location.
