MOTIONS CARRIED AT RAIL FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, PUBLIC MEETING IN CASTLEMAINE, AUGUST 6, 2004

  1. Given general concern regarding the removal of the second track and installation of broad gauge only sleepers, that this meeting calls on the State Government to suspend work on the Bendigo Line until an independent, expert inquiry has reported;
  2. Given that the major obstacle to a genuinely fast and reliable service is congestion in the metropolitan area, this meeting calls on the State Government to give priority in the Bendigo Regional Rail Project to the provision of separate tracks for country services through the suburbs;
  3. Given that the Federal Government has recently allocated funds for improved standard gauge access to Melbourne under the Auslink program, this meeting calls upon the State Government to review its decision to install broad gauge rather than standard gauge or gauge convertible sleepers on the Bendigo Line;
  4. This meeting calls upon all councils along the Bendigo Rail corridor to put maximum pressure on the State Government to enable retention of the double track and the installation of gauge convertible sleepers and to suspend work on the Line pending an independent and expert review;
