City to Vote on Flawed Transport Strategy

The Geelong Branch of the PTUA and Cycling Geelong Inc. note with alarm that the City is to consider the Geelong Transport Strategy at its next meeting on Tuesday 28th May. This is despite the recent release by these two organisations of a discussion paper on an Alternative and Sustainable Transport Strategy for Geelong, which has not been considered at all in the development of the Geelong Transport Strategy.

"We are very disappointed to learn that the City is about to adopt the Geelong Transport Strategy as a fait accompli just as we were attempting to encourage community debate and discussion about alternative and sustainable transport issues" said Debi Hamilton, President of Cycling Geelong.

"The adoption of the Geelong Transport Strategy would probably mean that our proposal for the development of a Public Transport Action Plan which would address important issues such as service coordination and frequency, and which may have attracted State Government funding, will probably not go ahead", added Tim Petersen of PTUA Geelong.

An Open Letter was sent to City Councillors this week in an attempt to have this important issue opened to community debate and discussion.
