Tram Stop Cuts Approved - Campaign Enters New PhaseMelbourne City Council's Planning Committee has voted to remove one-third of the tram stops in Collins Street. They have done so despite opposition from business and community groups including the PTUA, the Collins St Precinct Association, the Collins St Traders Association, the Association of Retired Persons and Rialto Tower management. The decision is particularly deplorable as the committee had before them an alternative proposal, put together by Cr Fraser Brindley, that would achieve all the same benefits for Yarra Trams and the disabled community but without removing stops. (The time savings from removing stops would instead be achieved by changing traffic light sequences.) For more information see our submissions to council, available from this page. WHAT YOU CAN DOThe axing of tram stops at King St, Queen St and Russell St can still be stopped if pressure is brought on the State Government (who has the power to order that the tram stops be retained) and Yarra Trams (who don't want adverse publicity, and are supportive of the alternative proposal). You can help do this by: Writing a letter to the editor. Calling talkback radio to express your concerns. Writing to the Transport Minister. Writing to the Premier. Visiting or writing to your local MP. © 2007 Public Transport Users Association Inc. (PTUA), Victoria, Australia. ABN 83 801 487 611. Last Modified: 22 April 2005 |
